Environmental Challenge International Competition

The Environmental Challenge (ECi) competition is sponsored by the Pacific Northwest International Section (PNWIS) of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA).

Objective
It is the objective of the EC competition to stimulate the pursuit of multidisciplinary environmental studies, at the university level, through tangible rewards for innovative solutions to problems involving potentially complex environmental issues.

Approach
A competition, between teams from PNWIS region universities, will be conducted to develop solutions to a complex environmental problem. The PNWIS Environmental Challenge (EC) Committee, in consultation with major EC fund sponsors, will define the challenge problem. University students are encouraged to form teams that include study disciplines addressed by the problem. Teams with winning proposals and presentations, as judged by a panel appointed by the Committee, will be awarded cash prizes. The prize amounts will be determined by the Committee and PNWIS Board.

Eligibility
The EC competition is open to all students (including graduate students) attending a college or university with a program in environmental engineering, technology, or science. These schools must be in the PNWIS region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, British Columbia, and Yukon Territory). Team registration forms must be submitted, if/as specified, prior to the annual conference. Each team member participating must register for and attend the annual conference during which the competition is judged.

ECi

This year the EC has become the EC International (ECi) as the competition expands beyond it's birth region and welcomes students from far and wide to participate. For the first time at A&WMA’s Annual Conference & Exhibition, students will have the opportunity to step into the role of an environmental professional—and win big. The Environmental Challenge International (ECi) is a student team competition to prepare and present an optimal solution to a complex “true-to-life” environmental problem, offering more than US$15,000 in prize money, and the kind of exposure that could lead to a coveted first job in the field. The “real-life” challenge posed to students will consider current environmental issues, representative of the conference location-the Pacific Northwest, and will require a multi-disciplinary solution. The challenge seeks technical answers combined with appropriate regulatory approaches and resolution of political and community issues. The ECi will accept teams with the broadest feasible range of environmental disciplines, including engineering, planning, policy, economics, and various other sciences to compete at the Portland conference. The ECi problemcan be found under the 2008 link below. Student teams applying for the competition can study the problem background, as well as the technical, social, economic, and political aspects of the situation. Competing teams are encouraged to keep apprised of ongoing events related to the problem, adjusting their solutions appropriately. Additional considerations will be applied to the problem at the conference, requiring teams to network with A&WMA professionals for guidance.
